PERSONALITY
STRENGTHS
+ Staying focused and alert
The job is the job, and Hammer is known for his razor-sharp focus when he's on duty. He doesn't talk about how hard it is to turn off the instincts and habits when he's off duty, which has resulted in unintended fights at the bar. He has (mostly) curbed this problem.
+ Compartmentalization
Keeping personal and professional lives separate, and not letting either affect the other is part of the job description as far as Hammer is concerned. Never let personal feelings affect the job, and bringing work into your personal life is just asking for disaster. Just ask his exes.
+ The most common denominator
Hammer isn't one for flourishes or the glitz and glamor of Iris; he comes from a practical life in a colony that doesn't have time for luxuries and it shows even if he's left NewG physically.
WEAKNESSES
- Pop Culture & Art
He isn't trying to be an asshole when he says he doesn't get it. He just doesn't get it.
- Gets into trouble
He's the type of guy who has to stop himself from getting into bar fights just for the heck of it; it has gotten him into trouble with his superiors numerous times but in their colony, having the street cred of being a mean asshole who can take a beating is a bigger threat than anything he can carry on him.
- Fun
Hammer is the kind of guy that has trouble naming his hobbies, or what he does for fun (because he doesn't have hobbies) and seems to just drift between being on duty and just...not.
LIFE PATH
Harrison, as he was known then, was born in New Georgetown, a mining colony on Higgs that uses in-situ leaching to harvest sedimentary uranium ore from the deep recesses of the ground. The colony provides tons of uranium to the rest of the Quad but pays the price of being under constant threat of radioactive contamination as a result.
His family was not any better than anyone else's. Like most families, his parents worked the mines and its supporting infrastructure. His two younger sisters [open to play] would follow suit in their own careers.
While NewG was provided with some of the best equipment that BIST has to offer, it is not the ideal place to live and unrest among the miners is always brewing. Drones may handle the worst of the work, but miners protested the loss of jobs to these robots, while refusing to work in the same hazardous conditions (or radioactive uranium) that the drones could handle without risk. It is a tale as old as time, if somewhat simplified for mass consumption. It made sense that Harrison grew into a young man who not only knew how to live with violence and an eye over his shoulder, but someone who thrived in it as well.
The unified security force that serviced the various colonies in Higgs paid well, and it suited Harrison just fine. The young upstart with a pension for coming home bleeding and bruised donned the black Kevlar uniform and put his strengths (some would say weaknesses) to good use. His hard head and pension of bulldozing his way through situations earned him the nickname "Hammer".
His career with the UPF (Unified Police Force) was not particularly decorated and his file includes a dozen or citations for off-duty fights but the UPF always needed more bodies and Hammer had a way of deescalating situations without even unholstering a single baton or firearm. It was the kind of silver lining that reduced such unsavory behavior from being suspensions and warnings to minor write-ups that no one really gave two shits about.
That was until his supervisor retired and a new supervisor began taking a dislike to him. Instead of justifying what he couldn't really make sense of himself, Hammer decided to pack up and applied to BIST.
Now, almost a decade later, Hammer still never returned to the UPF despite receiving the occasional inquiry from his old colleagues. As long as the asshole who tried to actually fire him was in charge at NewG, Hammer wasn't going back — even if the mandatory Zero-G training makes him want to hit someone repeatedly. In the face.
EXTRA NOTES
🔨 Hates being in Zero G, it's alien and disorientating
🔨 Almost certainly covered in cut and bruises, unless someone reports him to Medical
🔨 Describes his previous work in the UPF on Higgs as halfway between a traffic cop and SWAT, never knowing which end the pendulum will swing every time he clocked in
🔨 Has to be forced to attend team-building/socializing events
🔨 Usual off-duty haunts: gym, combat training room, shooting range, security station lounge, bar lounge, mess hall
🔨 Has a plant. It takes care of itself.
